Version: He's really the same no matter what canon you run with. I'll say anime, since it has scenes that the manga doesn't.

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Heterosexual, though he's really not too interested.

Appearance: When describing L, there are those who describe his appearance as "monstrous", "disgusting", and even "ugly". Perhaps if he cleaned up a bit more and actually stood up straight, he would be more attractive.

The tall and skinny L has long, disheveled black hair sticking up in all directions as if he's never combed it before. It hangs in his face, nearly overshadowing two large, dull eyes that appear to be black. He doesn't seem to see the light of day or even sleep very often, as his skin is white and there are heavy bags underneath his eyes, lending him to resemble a panda. He also doesn't put much thought into clothes, preferring a baggy, long-sleeved white shirt and baggy jeans over anything else. L has a strange hatred of shoes and especially socks, preferring to go barefoot whenever possible.

Personality: L has a series of odd habits that distinguish him amongst everyone else. He crouches rather than sits (claiming that it increases his reasoning ability by 40% to do so) and holds things with two or three fingers, as if they're filthy. Whenever he is seen eating, he is seen eating very sweet foods such as cake, candy, and fruit, and seemingly refuses to eat anything else. (In fact, L claims a lot of things that deserve question from others, such as his words that "if you use your brain enough, you can eat sweets without getting fat".)

Above all, he's very meticulous in his work as a detective, observing things to the finest detail and being able to point out things no one would notice otherwise. He will scrutinize evidence as much as he can and is able to form very complicated, yet reasonable, theories based on what he has. L is intelligent and can turn tides in his favor: he operates in secret and has the skills to make himself untracable. His genius allows him to be able to solve cases no one else can. No matter how smart he is, however, he is socially awkward, his unusual method of solving cases stepping on more than a few toes. He picks the right words, yet in his monotone voice, the words can come across as mocking or critical. He is also "childish and hates to lose", leading him to become very determined in his work.

Abilities/Weaponry: Beyond L's intelligence and quick-thinking, L also appears to have a number of hidden talents. He is skilled at playing tennis and was once the British Junior Champion, he knows how to fly a helicopter, he can use computers in every way possible...it's as if you could walk into him performing heart surgery and he would say that it's easy if you use your instinct. L is a fast learner and can read personalities well, able to predict the next moves of criminals and solve a case quickly as such. His only weapon is himself: L is skilled in the Brazilian art of caipoera, but will only strike if struck; it's purely for self-defense.

Weaknesses: L is completely and utterly a loner, not being cooperative with people. It's his way or the highway, and as a result many people hate the very idea of working with him and investing their trust in him. After all, who could trust a letter on a screen telling you to risk your life? He also lends himself to be blunt, even when he doesn't mean to be sarcastic or offend. His continuously calm demeanor angers some and annoys the rest.

L hates to lose and is rather childish, and he'll follow a case to the bitter end. He sees nothing wrong in revealing weaknesses to the enemy in order to get close to him, and this eventually leads to his death in Death Note. He's confrontational and doesn't know the meaning of "personal space", often leaning close to or touching those he's interviewing. He's adverse to anyone touching him, however, and will cringe and shake if anyone grabs his shoulder or shakes him unexpectedly.

History: L Lawliet was born on Halloween, 1979; where he was born, no one knows, as he never tells anyone much about his past. He was orphaned at an early age and switched hands at orphanages and hospitals frequently due to his unusual personality and constant crying. Finally, at the age of eight, he was taken in by the famous inventor, Quillsh Wammy, who ran an orphanage in England for mentally gifted children. As Lawliet grew, the police took notice of his ability to solve even the most mind-boggling of cases. By the time he was a older teen, he was the top three detectives in the world: L, Eraldo Coil, and Denuve.

Case after case, year after year went by...until in the fall of 2003, L noticed the mysterious deaths of criminals all over the world, the work of a serial killer nicknamed "Kira". Kira was seemingly able to kill using only a person's face and name, a fact that intrigued L. He took up the seemingly unsolvable case and managed to whittle it down to a few suspects, the biggest one being a student named Light Yagami. As time went on, L saw no trouble in revealing himself to Light and becoming closer to him, even allowing him to work on the case. Light, being the police chief's son, had no suspicion placed on him save for L's. However, Light was the true Kira, and he devised an ingenious plan to assasinate L quickly. L died of a heart attack on November 5th, 2004; the last thing he saw was Light's face, smiling menacingly down on him, and the detective died convinced he had been right all along.
